THE STARTUP PORTAL: WHAT FOUNDERS SHOULD KNOW

The Nigeria Startup Support and Engagement Portal (also referred to as “the Startup Portal”)  is an offshoot of the Nigeria Startup Act of 2022, this Act was set up to provide or create a thriving and enabling environment for technology-enabled startups in Nigeria to position Nigeria’s startup ecosystem as the leading digital technology center in Africa.

The portal was established by Section 10 of the Nigeria Startup Act to serve as a platform through which startups register with all relevant MDAs (Ministries, Departments, and Agencies) after being registered with the CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission).

It is designed as a one-stop platform that provides startups with easy access to registrations, access to information, resources, incentives, collaboration, and linkages.

FUNCTIONS OF THE STARTUP PORTAL

1. Registration of startups with all the relevant MDAs.

2. Facilitation of the issuance of permits and licenses for labeled startups.

3. Creation of avenues for the interaction between startups and the Federal Government, Private institutions, Venture Capitalists, etc.

4. Provision of vital information on clearances, approvals, and registration requirements for startups.

BENEFITS OF REGISTERING WITH THE STARTUP PORTAL

a. Provides opportunities for startups to enter into contracts with the Federal Government through public procurement or other engagement processes.

b. It provides tax and fiscal incentives for startups and investors.

c. It creates opportunities for startups to participate in beneficial programs such as pitch competitions, incubation and acceleration programs, showcases and fellowships, etc.

d. It gives startups access to finance, information, innovation, and the global market.

e. It fosters collaborative networking with relevant MDAs and industry players. 

HOW TO REGISTER ON THE STARTUP PORTAL

To sign up your company on the portal, you should:

1. Visit the link http://startup.gov.ng

2. Select the company category from the options available: Startups; Venture capitalists; Angel Investors; Accelerators, Innovation Hubs, and incubators.

3. Provide the following information:

a. RC No. or Corporate Affairs Commission(CAC) identification number.

b. Company Name.

c. Year of Incorporation.

d. Industry (type).

e. Company Email.

f. Startup Description.

g. Company Address.

h. Company Website.

i. Founder’s full name.

j. Founder’s Email address.

k. Founder’s Phone Number.

l. Founder’s means of Identification (BVN or NIN).

m.Proceed by clicking “SUBMIT” and wait for the portal coordinator to assess your application.

CONCLUSION

The Startup Portal is a welcomed development particularly for startups in unpopular regions within the country as the latter will be able to gain access to the same opportunities and platforms that others situated in major cities have easy access to.
